KU Police Department's Bicycle Registry

If your bike is stolen and you can't identify it, you will have little chance of recovering it even if the thief is caught. This department encourages your participation in a free bicycle registration program designed to reduce criminal opportunity on campus. Having a serial number on file facilitates the identification of a bike's rightful owner. Complete this registration form and submit it immediately. If your bike has no serial number, call the KU Police at 785-864-5900 and ask for community services to arrange to have it marked so it may be identified and registered. We can provide you with tools to engrave your driver’s license number, or other unique identification number, on your frame. We’ll use this as alternate identification to the manufacturer’s serial number. Your bike registration will not be complete and processed without a serial number.

Locating your Serial Number:

The majority of serial numbers are located under the bottom bracket where the two pedal cranks meet. Turn your bike upside down and record the number. If there is no serial number near the cranks, you should check other common places including the front headset or rear stays. The diagram (below) indicates five of the most common serial number locations.

Fill out our bicycle registration form to document your bicycles make, model, and serial number and to have it on file with the KU Police Department.
